Top 10 Resources for NEHS Advisers
Schools generally, and NEHS chapters specifically promote achievement in four major areas: academics, activities, arts, and athletics. The NEHS chapter in your building can increase the impact of these aspects of education for all students in your school by referring to the following programs and awards.
1. Presidential Educational Awards Program (PEAP), sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education, in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, this program was developed to help principals recognize and honor those students who have achieved high academic goals by their hard work and dedication to learn.
2. American Student Council Association (ASCA) Elementary schools with student councils can find resources and earn recognition for their student leaders through ASCA, a program of NAESP.
3. American Citizenship Awards (ACA) honors any student in elementary, middle, or high school who has shown by their words and actions that they possess the qualities and characteristics we hope to instill in all our students.
4. "Reflections" is an arts recognition program of the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) designed to enhance rather than replace a quality arts education by providing opportunities for students to express themselves and to receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts.
5. President’s Challenge takes staying active beyond the school gym, and into everyday life. Getting involved in the President's Challenge takes students into a whole series of programs designed to help improve their activity level.
6. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognize students in grades 5–12 who have demonstrated exemplary community service. The program was created in 1995 and is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
7. "Dream, Reach, Succeed" NAESP is collaborating with The Hershey Company and the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations in a unique national awards program that recognizes students who aspire to greatness at home, in school, and in their communities.
8. Presidential Volunteer Service Awards recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours served over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime.
9. America’s Promise (AP). Building on the legacy of the founder of America’s Promise, General Colin Powell, AP is the leader in forging a strong and effective partnership alliance committed to seeing that children experience the fundamental resources they need to succeed – the Five Promises (caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, an effective education and opportunities to help others) – at home, in school and out in the community. See NEHS and America’s Promise for an elaboration on this important service resource.
10. Action for Healthy Kids is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes in schools. A4HK works in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to improve children's nutrition and increase physical activity, which will in turn improve their readiness to learn.
